At the moment it is highly necessary that everyone should put the rules of conduct into practice in his daily life; that he should submit to a freely accepted, but strict discipline. Are we modern men capable of such an effort? Have we the intelligence and energy to give up the habits we find so pleasant and convenient? To behave rationally in the mental and material milieu created by modern society demands positive heroism. ~ Alexis Carrel
Except for my Roku, I don’t have my television hooked up to the outside world. Because of this, I am much more sensitive to commercials when I’m someplace where there is a TV playing (theoretically) in the background.
One thing I’ve noticed is the message of “easy” that is being drilled into our heads. Easy banking. Easy weight loss. Easy meals. Easy cleanup. Easy online shopping. Easy parking. Even better, easy parallel parking! Even easy diaper changing!
Now, I’m not necessarily against all of that ease (especially when it comes to diapers) but perhaps our culture has become a bit too accustomed to things being easy. And when it isn’t easy, we don’t have the resilience to overcome the obstacles that have been put in the way of achieving our goals.
For me, this shows up in my sewing (I want it done now!), in my physical fitness (I don’t need to exercise today…and those today’s turn into weeks with exercising), and in resisting food that I know is not good for me (starches upset my stomach but it doesn’t seem to stop me from eating them). As I was journaling this morning, I realized that the first quarter for the year is almost over and I haven’t really made any headway towards my goals in those areas. Note: I’m not beating myself up over it, but the lack of self-discipline also leads to an increase in disappointment that I haven’t achieved my goals.
So, the next time you’re ready to abandon something, ask yourself if you are abandoning it because it is really time to move on or if it requires a bit more self-discipline to achieve the goal.
How are you going to be your own heroine through self-discipline?
