The long slog of the presidential campaign in the United States is finally over. I’ve voted. Have you?
But I’m concerned about the people who are so disillusioned with the choices for presidential candidates and turned off by the bitterness of this campaign season that they’ve decided to not vote this time around.
I’ve always considered voting to be more than just a civic duty. Voting is my way of making sure my voice is heard. And not just about my choice for president but also for congressional, state, and local representation. If you don’t think your vote matters, consider this: According to the New York Times, only 9% of America chose Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump to be the nominees for President. If more citizens had voted in the primaries, this election may have been very different.
I believe that voting is a core value held in esteem by the Modern Retro Women community. Tuesday in November is a film created by the Office of War Information in 1945 as a means of educating overseas audiences about the American political and election process. Even though it is a bit idealized, the lessons embedded within it resonate deeply with me. I’ll admit that I got a little bit misty-eyed in the middle of it. But I also appreciate that the film also points out that Americans will argue about the candidates and issues but still accept the results of the vote and can remain friends and colleagues with those that vote differently than they do.
