I hate watching those home makeover shows. You know the ones I’m talking about: A family is surprised by a team of contractors and designers. They go off on an all-expenses paid vacation and the TV show proceeds to destroy their home in the name of making it better. The antique steamer trunk that was brought over from the old country by great-great Aunt Penny and is a symbol of hope for a new life is spray painted black. The time capsule kitchen and bathrooms are “updated” with pressboard cabinetry. And on it goes. After they are done, the home sticks out like a big-boxed sore thumb in a neighborhood of modest homes. No one bothered asking the homeowners to answer the question, “What type of home for me?”
But maybe I’m just a grumpy-pants and want a little more say in what my home looks like.
In her book, Decorating Begins With You*, mid-century interior designer, Mary Jean Alexander, reminds us that we have taste…or can at least develop it. Alas, all too often women decorate their homes using the Target Method of Home Decor. They run into their local Target to pick up some pantyhose and come out with all sorts of home decor items that were showcased in the seasonal display section (and then they get home and realize that they forgot to get the pantyhose). Come on, you know you’ve succumbed to buying that really cute thingabob that you didn’t know you needed until you saw it. Not that I know about such things from experience or anything… (ahem…where were we? Oh, yes…) That kind of impulsive buying leads to a hodge-podge of home decorating and leaves us feeling just a bit unsatisfied with the overall look of our homes.
Thank goodness, Miss Alexander is hear to help us. First, though, we need to take the quiz to answer the question, “What type of home for me?” She tells us that the quiz will “aid in focusing your attention on the variety of influences to be considered when you plan your new home or consider any decorating problem.”
Okay, Glam Pack! Get out your paper and pencils for your What Type of Home for Me pop quiz. There is no time limit. Click the image to enlarge it, if you need to do so. We will grade our quizzes in the next post on this topic.
Part 1: Things You Like to Do
Instructions: In each group of five statements, choose the two things that you would like most to do. Choose two, but only two statements from each group. Make two choices even if it may seem difficult to in some instances. When you have chosen a statement, put its number on your blank piece of paper–this will be used later in scoring (Wait…how many statements, Glam Pack, are we supposed to choose??).
Part 2: Things You Like or Don’t Like
Instructions: Again, choose two statements our of each group of five. Select the two things you like best of those listed within the group (even if you don’t really like any of them, or like them all). Be sure to choose two, but not more than two, from each block of five. Record your selections by number, just as you did for Part 1.
Part 3: How Do You Describe Yourself?
Instructions: Choose the two statements, in each group of five, that you feel describes yourself best. Choose the two best from each group whether or not you feel they really describe you accurately. The over-all pattern of answers is what counts, not a particular individual case. But don’t skip any, or your score will suffer. Make the best choices you can and record them, as before.
Now remember, Glam Pack, you were only supposed to choose two statements from each set of five statements. I don’t want you losing points because you didn’t follow directions…
We will score our quizzes in the next post on this topic but were there any patterns that you saw emerging? Do you think you know what kind of home you prefer even before we score our quizzes?
