I love cabbage - we saute it until it is a little caramelized and it's quite yummy.

And I wish, oh I wish, there was K-Mart (ditto Target) here in Canada!

I remember the Polaroid camera my mother bought in the early '60s -- smaller than the one Jack Paar was holding. Mother loved it. I remember how pleased she was when she took a picture of my grandfather and his brother. The first wasn't good, which enabled her to take another immediately. Ah, Technology!

As I recall, you snapped the photo, then waited 60 seconds before opening the back of the camera and removing your print. Then we had a cartridge of some smelly goo that we applied to the photo, and that had to dry. The film was expensive and I don't think she took many pictures with it. I have a few -- badly faded.

And I remember how disappointed Mother was when within a short few years the camera was obsolete and we could no longer buy the film. Yes, I would say she was upset by that.

Nice "odds & ends" post. Our nearest Target is 100 miles away in Spokane, and I don't seek it out. We do have a regular (not super) K-Mart, and I haven't poked around there in years. Probably 15 years ago they experimented with self-check, mostly eliminating regular check stands -- and that eliminated me as a customer. Then my husband, a K-Mart fan, noticed that he was paying much more at K-Mart for his hardware-type items, and he quit going there. But -- I will stop by and take a look at the housewares.

The cake looks great, but alas! I would probably devour 1600 calories in one sitting. I'll give the various cabbage / carrot dressings a try, though. A refreshing change from lettuce salad.

I used to change bedspreads between winter and summer. Any more I just pull the bedspread back in summer. But chenille will be a nice retro look.

And we have not Target wihtin 90 miles of us, but a small K-mart ~15 miles away.

I wanted to share my recipe for dressing I use on carrot-raisin salad or coleslaw (I make this from cabbage or broccoli stem or even shredded kohlrabi). It is siimilar to the one you have here, but no sour cream (I'm lactose intolerant): a "dollop" of mayo and a little honey, plus some "Mrs. Dash regular"; mix really well and add enough lemon juice to make it "mixable" - you can choose the amount of honey & lemon juice to taste. We like it better than using sugar - my mum's traditional recipe altered - she used sugar.

KMart also carries NordicWare cookie sheets and loaf pans -- good, heavy, made-in-USA untreated aluminum, the pans I've been looking for for twenty years.

I was at a NAPO (National Association of Professional Organizers) conference 5 years ago and saw the product, bought it, and it sat in the box for 6 months. But once I started using it I was hooked. I began to use it in my business, (I'm an estate organizer) advising my clients to use it, and then started teaching workshops on decluttering at the local community college. I completed my certification as a FreedomFiler consultant and am an advisor with the founder and CEO of FreedomFiler, Seth Odam. I began one year ago doing monthly virtual teleclasses focused on organizing your life to find balance, order and joy. I love sharing with people about FreedomFiler and how it can simplify your life and get rid of those piles. Although the product itself is very intuitive, easy to set up and use out of the box, I find that most people can get a lot more out of it with my teleclasses. I also post Q&A's on my FB page, send a monthly helpful tip, and provide personal consulting. It's a very rewarding career and I am proud to be associated with the product.

Dear Dr. Julie-Ann, I love your site and thanks to my good friend and mentor Meggin for posting on FB. Your "I might need it informationitus" condition is either highly contagious or it's in our DNA because I rarely find anyone who doesn't suffer from it. It's so tied up with emotional stuff and indecision, people really do suffer and beat themselves up for saving and storing all this paper clutter. You are so fortunate to have had your grandfather prepare everything for you and your family before he passed. He knew exactly what was needed, no more no less. The GoodHousekeeping chart is helpful but I know of an even better tool that I have been using and sharing for over 5 years called the FreedomFiler. It is a filing "system" that has all those retention rules built into the color-coded label system. They call it a "self purging system" which really means that once you file it, you don't have to make any more decisions because they are made for you. I would love to share more about it if you and your readers are interested, but check out the website www.askfreedomfilerexpert.com for more info about the product. PS: notice I use the same overwhelmed lady behind the desk image on my website.
