The successful party is one at which the results in fun and effectiveness greatly outbalance the time required to arrange it. ~Carolyn Coggins, Successful Entertaining At Home: A complete Guide for Informal Entertaining, 1952
To enjoy planning and hosting a party, you need to feel confident in the outcome. Given your circumstances, there only may be a handful of types of parties you can successfully host. You’ll only know for sure if you try out different social events and then sticking with the ones that work and where you enjoy yourself.
Here are four things to remember:
- Are you known for your entertainment repertoire? You don’t always have to have a different type of party and food. Become known for your “signature dish” and serve it and your “signature party” and host it. Restaurants become known for a certain ambiance and menu. Why can’t you?
- What is most important? Is the focus of your party your guests and making sure they have a good time or being a martyr hostess who wears herself out before the party begins? I’ve been to parties given by a martyr hostess who spends the entire time talking about how she slaved in the kitchen and cleaned the house top to bottom all day. I’ll confess that I’m always uncomfortable around a martyr hostess. Am I supposed to feel guilty because she lost perspective?
- Is your home inviting or a showcase? I remember going to a friend’s house when I was a teenager and being afraid to touch anything or sit down. You don’t want your guests to be nervous about ruining something. If you are concerned about your tabletops, either cover them or put plenty of coasters in plain view. Have hassocks available for extra seating and/or putting one’s feet up. Having a chaotic home is just as uninviting as a showcase home. Guests never know what they will encounter such as having schmutz stuck to their backside when they stand up after sitting on your couch.
- Are you enjoying yourself? If you aren’t enjoying yourself, neither will your guests.
Do you have a type of party that you are famous for hosting or a food that everyone looks forward to enjoying?
To your fabulous Technicolor entertaining!
