Dear Friends,
Since, by British protocol, the new bride of Prince William should not be called a princess, do you think they will still let her use this phone?
As an aside, we have two of Crosley’s vintage inspired touch-tone phones–a black wall phone in the kitchen (complete with the 20 foot coiled chord) and a black desk phone in our home office. One time my then-13 or 14-year-old nephew was looking at it and asked me how it worked. I told him the same way any other touch tone phone worked, the only difference was the layout of the buttons. *chuckle*
What about you? Did you own a princess phone or were you like me and were a total outcast because your parents didn’t understand how so very important it was to have one AND your very own phone number that you didn’t have to share with your siblings (or else you would just die…but then they noted later in your life that you didn’t, in fact, die because you were deprived of the beloved princess phone and your own phone line)?
Sincerely,
Dr. Julie-Ann

No princess phone, but I have a reproduction of a black 1960s “handbag” phone…with spiral cord.
What happened at jury duty?
I never had a princess phone. There are some things I just knew better than to ask for, and a phone of my own was one of them. In fact, the “share and share alike” principle was so ingrained in both of us that my husband and I have trouble realizing that some things — like computers, iPods, and cell phones — are really meant to be personal items. It’s a totally different mindset from the “retro” age.
Yes, I was obsessed with these phones, and yes, my parents did not understand. I still remember a TV Guide cover from the early 80′s with Miss Piggy on it – I truly thought she was glamorous, without any irony – and she is lounging in a pool and has a princess phone with her, in the pool – how cool is that? I don’t know how to email you, but I just posted a retro phone on fb that we have in our basement. My sil gave it to us recently – better late than never! ha ha!
Pam, I had to go find a picture of the “handbag phone.” That is pretty mod looking!
Kathy, I’m still on jury duty. It is a pretty big case and the jury is still being selected. If I get chosen, I will serve for another two weeks.
I did have a princess phone in my room, but I did not have my own line so I didn’t use it very much. My mother had and still has what my father used to call “Telephone-itis”. She is always on the phone chatting with someone. LOL. So my use of the princess phone was rare since I rarely had the chance to get a call in between my mother’s phone calls.
I still have a pink princess phone! Complete with rotary dial! It sits on my writing desk and I still love it. I do wish the dial still lit up when I pick up the receiver; I’m afraid to take it apart to see if I could fix it. My husband wants us to get rid of the land line and just use our cell phones. I would miss this phone — (and we have a black wall phone like yours in our kitchen, too!)
