Why Is It?

Why is it that I can restore order to my husband’s dresser drawers only to come back 5 minutes later to put laundry away and discover they are in disarray again…and no one else is home but me so I can’t even blame it on him?? Anyone else have this phenomenon going on in their home?

  • This is a great blog and I am enjoying my subscription!

  • My husband appreciates a neat and tidy home after the manner of his mother, “retro super woman” Bennie, who ranks right up there with the best. What I noticed about Bennie’s style, at least in the years that I experienced her, was that things were neat and tidy but not necessarily the cleanest. However, you didn’t notice — unless you were a nosy daughter-in-law — because the overall impression was great.

I have struggled with neat and tidy my whole life, but I can tell you, Dr. J — I believe more time lapsed than you realized and “your honey” went through his drawers with an eggbeater while your back was turned. In retirement, I have become rather insistent that my husband tend his own drawers. My “newlywed” daughter says her husband tends his drawers, puts away his own laundry and color codes his clothes placement in the closet. I say “more power to him.”

Hi Mary! Dr. J said we could talk amongst ourselves while she’s busy. I have been visiting here a couple of years now, and I love it.

  • Hi Dr. J,
I have come to realize my husband is a ‘visual sorter’ type of guy: if it’s out where he can see it, then he can find it. But if it is put away in a drawer, then it is as good as lost. You can imagine his bureau, and personal spaces! I think this is an accute type of ‘right brain’ thinking, and after living with him for over 25 years, I realize I cannot change him, only prevent his stuff from taking over the entire bedroom.
