My condolences to you and your family. Your grandpa sounds like he was a really neat person - you don't meet too many handsome gentlemen anymore who like to dance, so I can understand his popularity. Take care.

Thank you Julie. That was beautiful. Loved the story of green jello. I haven't seen any yet. Perhaps those days are gone. Love, Mom

Hi Julie,

My condolences to you and your family. I appreciate your research about mourning and community support. I pray that you receive comfort in the the kindness of neighbors and friends.

I have missed your podcasts and expected that it was due to your tailoring class. For quite a while I wanted to leave you a comment to tell you how I appreciate you sharing your adventures in seeking additional training in fashion sewing and in developing the blog about homemaking.

My maternal Grandma was my sewing inspiration and I was fortunate to have her in my life. Thanks for reminding me of that kinder, gentler time and the love of my grandparents.

Dr. Julie, I am so sorry to learn of your Gradad's passing. This is a beautiful post, and I can see how much you loved and admired him. I like his photo - he does look like a 'live wire' and sounds like a really fun person. I lost my paternal Grandma in August. She was 92, would have been 93 on Valentines day. I also found this post interesting. Unfortunately, I know a few people who are seriously ill, and I do think about this often - I don't want to intrude but I want to know people I am there for them and want to be a source of support. I will look up some jello recipes - that was a charming anecdote. My best to you and your family at this difficult time.

My heart goes out to you Julie, on the passing of your beloved granddad whose photo i love and i see the young spark in his eye. i care for and talk daily to my dad who is independent and living creative at almost age 90, having survived my mother Evelyn's passing now 2 years ago. It's hard for him to go on every day without her and all his friends, with the exception of one last friend Bernice, have passed. Know I hold the candle with you tonight for all the gifts he gave you and your family.

Love Helene, Daughter of Evelyn and Howard

First, let me express condolences at the passing of your grandfather. My maternal grandfather passed away at 96 on Christmas Eve, 1971. For the last ten years of his life, whenever he was ill, the doctor would tell my mother the end was imminent. Mother would make the necessary calls to alert the family and within days he would be up and about. Sounds like our mothers had similar experiences. Well, I think your grandfather did get up again -- you just didn't see him this time.

Green Jell-O. I had to laugh a little to myself. When Grandpa passed on, one of our neighbors came to the door with a green Jell-O salad, filled with cabbage, carrots, nuts, and celery. (Is that a Waldorf salad?) Four days later, my dad's sister passed on at the same nursing home, and I opened the back door to find the same neighbor. "I thought maybe you folks could use another salad," she said, as she handed me another of the same salad. It was delicious and so thoughtful, but we had plenty of it on hand for a while.
